Get a Commercial Drivers License

To get a truck job and drive a semi or tractor trailer you are going to need to get a CDL license. Depending on the type of vehicle you plan on driving or what you intend to haul you may need additional endorsements on your commercial drivers license as well. You may see the term CDL, which is the common abbreviation for commercial drivers license, used often throughout this and other sites.

To drive an 18 wheeler you are going to have to pass a road test with a state licensed CDL examiner to get your CDL. If you do not own your own tractor trailer combination and have a friend who can train you, you will have to go to a trucking school to get the proper training. Depending on the type of trucking school that you attend you will either have to get your CDL learners permit before right before you go to school or right after you arrive at the trucking school.

You need to pass the CDL written test at the Department of Motor Vehicles to obtain a CDL permit so that you can practice driving a truck with a qualified instructor. To prepare for this CDL permit Test you should study the General Knowledge, Air Brakes, and Combination Vehicles sections of your state CDL manual. Then use the free commercial drivers license tests on the left side of this page to practice and measure your progress.

These practice exams are free and an excellent tool for mastering this information for new drivers. Each test is graded for you at the end of each CDL exam as well as showing you the correct CDL test answer during the test. The process of getting a commercial drivers license may seem overwhelming, but if you take it one step at a time it is not very difficult at all. Before you know it you will be driving down the road in an 18 wheeler making the big money!
