Do you need a Class A Drivers License?

If you are going to drive a Semi or 18 wheeler, more than likely you are going to need to get a Class A Drivers License. The text book definition states that any combination vehicle with a gross combination weight rating of 26,001 or more pounds and the gross vehicle weight rating of the vehicles towed exceeds 10,000 pounds needs a Class A CDL. If you plan on becoming an over the road truck driver you will be driving a combination vehicle that meets these requirements.

If for some reason you are not sure if that applies to you lets look at a Class B drivers license. The only difference is a class B is a single vehicle instead of a combination vehicle with a towed vehicle that does not exceed the gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds. Again, most all truck drivers are going to need to get a Class A. Some exemptions or exceptions from having to get a commercial drivers license are farmers, volunteer firemen, and military personnel. For details read your state CDL study guide.
