How to use the CDL Manual

To get a commercial drivers license you are going to have to pass a written CDL permit test. When you pass this test you will get a learners permit used to practice driving the type of vehicle that you will take the road test in. When you pass the road test you will then have earned your CDL License. To pass the written permit test you will have to study all of the information in the CDL Manual.

The CDL manual can be obtained from most state Department of Motor Vehicle websites or your local DMV. This manual is also referred to as a CDL guide or CDL study guide. Most of these manuals contain specific information pertaining to your state but the test information is all based on Federal Regulations and the same for most of the state tests.

Each CDL study guide will have sections for the Air Brake Test, Hazardous Materials Test, combination vehicles, etc. Open up the CDL manual and start at the very beginning. This is pretty boring stuff but should be read at least one time to get a general idea of the contents. Take your time and read each section slowly that applies to the type of CDL that you will be testing for.
