The Air Brake test is full of very important questions and a truck driver should have no problem answering any of them at any time. Understanding how the Air Brake system works is crucial for anyone that wants to become a truck driver and imperative for operation of a tractor trailer combination. This is information that needs to be learned and understood, not memorized. As a truck driver you will be inspecting and troubleshooting the air brakes system on a daily basis so take your time and learn this valuable information.

Open your CDL manual and read the Air Brakes section as many times as it takes to get a good understanding of how the system works and the parts of this system. Visualize what happens to the air in the system when the brakes are set or when the brake pedal is depressed. Do not just memorize the Pump down test, understand why it is done and how it checks the system for air leaks and malfunctions. Look at the pictures of the components so you will recognize them and understand their function.
